A map of the Punjab region from 1947 showing the different doabs.
Majha is an historical region of the Punjab comprising of the districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran in India and the districts of Lahore and Kasur in Pakistan spanning the upper Bari Doab and also parts of Rechna Doab including Sheikhupura and Gujranwala. Majha comprised of the older settled parts of the Bari and Rechna Doabs the newer settled part being the canal colonies. Its historical definitions may include a few more areas since present day divisions may not accurately cover all the historical regions considered as part of Majha in the past.
Largest part of Majha called the Bari Doab, since it is the Doab or (fluvial) tract between two of the five great rivers of the Punjab: the Ravi and the Beas. As such, Majha lies in the heart of the ancient Punjab region. No wonder then, that one meaning of Majha is ‘the central plains’ or ‘the central country.’ Major towns in the region include Amritsar, Batala, Gurdaspur, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala and Tarn Taran Sahib.
The people of Majha are known as Majhhis.or Majhails
The Punjabi spoken in Majha (called Maajhi) is considered to be standard Punjabi although linguists also classify it as one of the several dialects of the language. Majha region is extremely historical.
